LEGO Digital Designer was develope by the LEGO Groups as a design software for Windows and Mac OS X computer. It is offere as a free software to allow a creates to build models using virtual LEGO bricks. Designer will find that user interface and user experience is similar to computer-aided design in that instructions and a box design will be offere to users. The platform also works together with LEGO Design by ME website, where you will find additional instructions and complete boxes. Each designer can take a screen captures of their finishe products as well as store the models in an exclusive LDD file extension.
LEGO modes and tools:
LEGO Digital Designer opens with the Welcome Screen with following themes: The LEGO Digital Designer, LEGO Mindstorm, and LEGO Digitial Designer EXTENDED. LDD allows you to build your model using a large but limited selection of bricks while LDD Extend offers an unlimited assortment of bricks and colors. Mind storms is different that its parts are source from a unique robot set. LDD is optimize for mouse controls. Each theme can be operated from three operation modes: Build Modes, Building Guide Modes and View Modes.You can start building by selecting the Build Modes. Here, you will find all the building tools that helps you select, move, color, rotate, and clone your bricks. The program has a point-and-shoot UX but it also allows you to use hot keys to select a particular tools. For example: the Hinge tool can be selected using the Hot key. This is used for rotating bricks that are connected by a hinge or a single stud connection. It is used in tandem with the Hinge Align tools which is in charge of connecting two points.
Building palette:
Every model creats on LEGO Digital Designer has its own building palette. Its contain three tabs: Brick palette, Group palette, and Template palette. The Brick palette gives you an unlimited number of bricks to build with. This is not to be confuse with the LEGO Digital Designer EXTENDED, which allows you to color to the bricks freely regardless of their design. Here, you can filter bricks by LEGO sets or find bricks by color. Should you need a specific bricks, you can type in the word in the search fields.The Grouping palette lets you creates a selection of bricks for a later use. This makes its easier for you to access certain bricks that you often needed such as car wheels, rooftops, and aircraft wings. Each groups has a preview or a thumbnail which lets you know its contents. Templates: on the other hand, is a set of groups. This feature is helpful when you want to creates the same foundation of bricks for a different projects.
